Meristem to Production
Connecting tissue culture, clean plant stock, and greenhouse production in one propagation process.
Connecting the lab to production
A propagation process has to do more than produce healthy plants in a culture vessel. Those plants need to survive the move to a greenhouse, and the lab needs to maintain clean stock for the next cycle.
This work connected meristem tip dissection and pathogen screening with stock storage, tissue culture media, and acclimatization. The photographs record the small, early stages of that process: labelled cultures at two weeks and developing plantlets at three weeks after dissection.
The connected pieces
- Meristem dissection and screening for pathogen elimination.
- Long-term storage and maintenance of plant genetic material.
- Media and propagation protocols adjusted through experimentation.
- Acclimatization from sterile culture to greenhouse conditions.
- Records linking nutrition, hormones, and light in the lab to later production performance.
The process also had to fit the facility’s existing climate control and irrigation. Treating the lab and greenhouse as one system made production performance part of the feedback for lab decisions.
